RC-UK Energy and Communities Programme

Heat and the City is funded under the Research Councils' Energy and Communities Programme. The programme funded a total of seven projects at the end of 2010. All projects work with communities in a variety of ways to research appropriate approaches to reducing primary energy demand. The other six projects are

• Energy biographies is a 4 year research project based at Cardiff University, led by Professor K. Henwood and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. The project aims to explore how people use energy as part of their everyday life in order to understand how reductions in energy demand might be achieved.  See www.energybiographies.org for more information or contact Dr Fiona Shirani (fionashirani@cardiff.ac.uk).  
• The Role of Community-Based Initiatives in Energy Saving (University of Southampton, led by Professor G. Smith) 
• EVALOC: Evaluating the Impacts, Effectiveness and Success of Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)-funded Low Carbon Communities on Localised Energy Behaviours (Oxford Brookes University, led by Dr R. Gupta)
• Reducing Energy Consumption Through Community Knowledge Networks (Keele University, led by Professor A. Dobson
• Sustainability Invention and Energy Demand Reduction: Co-designing communities and practice (Goldsmiths University of London, led by Dr M. Michael)
• Smart Communities: Shaping new low carbon communities norms and practices (Kingston University, led by Dr R. Rettie)
